21st June: Seascow trial rigging

I’d been waiting for a calm day to try rigging “Seascow” and one came soon after dawn on Sunday 21st June. I discovered a list of things to do including:

  • whip end of halyard
  • attach pulleys at mast base for halyard and kicking strap, also downhaul?
  • rotate mast about 60° so halyard runs more freely
  • create proper topping lift, however probably don’t need lazy jacks
  • create kicking strap
  • get the tack closer to the mast to improve sail shape
  • rope around mast to secure inboard end of boom
  • better attachment of mainsheet to boom

However it looks like the rig will work OK.  From the pulley block to the bottom of the king post is 3.43m, so to the top of the flag should be maybe 3.7m the bridge clearances (at H.A.T.) are Northam Bridge: 4.2m, Railway(Itchen): 4.0m, and Cobden Bridge: 4.1m; so with the main scandalised she will go under OK. From the pulley block to the cleats is 2.80m and to the transom is 4.03m so a topping lift 7m long should be adequate to allow some slackening when the sail is set.
