Descriptions of Sailing Trips during 2018
First sail of the year and first use of the new asymmetric spinnaker. So far I’m very pleased with it! I motored up the Beaulieu River to Bucklers Hard before returning to Southampton. Of course there’s a list of things to fix!
A single tide sail down to Hamble Spit with the new top-down furling asymmetric set. I don’t usually manage to get so far down Southampton Water before turning back for the tide.
An early morning start and a northerly wind got Seatern through Hurst Narrows while the ebb was still flowing strongly. Then the wind got up and for the rest of the day it was variable in speed and direction.
A full days sail to and past Yarmouth to the entrance to Colwell Bay before returning to Southampton.
Drifting and sailing down the western Solent, discovering the back eddy at the Trap, and turning off Milford-on-Sea. Back through some of the Cowes Week racing fleets!
A whole day trip past Hurst Narrows and hoping to get to Hengistbury Head. However i was worried that the wind would drop and turned back at Chewton Bunny, a valley or chine in Highcliffe which is a nature reserve.
A full days sail in the eastern Solent going out past Portsmouth and to the edge of Bembridge Ledges. During the day I went close to each of the Solent Forts. On the way back lack of wind meant more motoring than I would have hoped.
My “traditional” visit to the Boat Show by water… this year on the Friday, the first day. I left late on the early morning tide and sailed out into the Solent and towards Salt Mead until Seatern was halted by the flooding tide and I returned down Southampton water to the Boat Show.
Starting early with Dai having cooling problems, then out to the Needles Fairway Buoy, back up the North Channel and, by the time I was back at Calshot, some curious winds.
