28th June: Jet-ski Incident at Calshot

I was meant to do my usual Sunday watch at NCI Stone Point but they needed someone at NCI Calshot, so I swapped over with my Lepe watch being filled by someone who cannot climb the Tower.

The first we saw of the incident was a jet-ski in the shipping channel with no rider and a motor cruiser standing near by.  A second jet ski went at speed from behind the Sunderland Hangar and after approaching the motor cruiser, returned to the shore to ferry someone out to ride the unmanned jet-ski back to Calshot.

We checked that no high-speed ferries were approaching but only learnt what was happening via radio comms from the motor cruiser to Solent Coastguard.  It appeared that the original jet-ski user was injured and the motor cruiser ferried him back to Calshot. Our only involvement was to give a commentary on the situation to HM Coastguard while RNLI Calshot Lifeboat were mobilised to bring the casualty from a rescuing vessel to the shore where both the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and a further ambulance arrived to take over.

As we left at the end of the watch the Air Ambulance departed from Calshot.  I drove over to Lepe where NCI Stone Point had “eyes on” a yacht aground, although apparently not in distress, on Lepe Spit!
