7th June: D-Day at Lepe

I was booked on the 1400-1730 watch at NCI Stone Point so went to Lepe early to watch the D-Day Service.  I must admit that as an atheist, who is becoming more and more convinced of the harm done by religion, I feel uneasy at the deaths of so many people being commemorated by a Christian Service.  In any case people of other religions were fighting on our side, and no doubt on the German side too.

So for the service I stood to one side behind the Hampshire Caledonian Pipe Band.  However in that position, close to the snare drums and pipes, I have to admit that the hymn “Amazing Grace” was very moving.  But that is the danger of it all, it plays on emotions rather than reason… “you never ask questions when God’s on your side” (Dylan).
