26th August: a new Priory Road!

During the period 17th to 26th August, Priory Road south of the St Denys Road junction was completely resurfaced. Fore-warned, I kept the car in the drive and avoided commitments other than at the middle weekend when the road was open.  It was curious how all the cars found somewhere else to park!

The method was impressive.  After some preparatory work around the various iron works, a machine scraped off the existing surface depositing it into a series of trucks.  What remained was a concrete surface which had been pock-marked by the scraping machine.  This surface was level with stones forming the gutter along the road side of the kerb stones.  Was the original road surface concrete?

A day or two later another machine, fed by a fleet of trucks, laid the new tarmac surface which was immediately rolled firm by a very busy “steam-roller”.  I’m not sure that we still have as much of a rain gutter as we had before, time will tell!
