First Weekend: Nikko and Niigata
During our first week in Japan, while I was in the IGOSS seminar at the Japan Meteorological Agency, Nicky had been exploring Tokyo. The weekend was free of meetings so on the Saturday we went to Nikko via the Tohoku Shinkansen to Utsunomiya and then the JR Nikko commuter line. Nikko is a tourist destination known for its natural beauty and various Temples and Shrines, in particular the Nikkō Tōshō-gū Shrine.
On the Sunday we took the Joetsu Shinkansen to Niigata, I can’t now remember why! Probably it was because we knew we would be going north of Tokyo to Sendai and southwest to Kyoto so the trip gave a chance to go across Honshu island to the Japanese Sea coast.
