Mount Field National Park

Having got back from Cape Grim on the Saturday, on Sunday I drove to Mount Field National Park which is about 82 km (51 miles) northwest of Hobart.

Within the Park there is a single dirt road leading west to Lake Dobson (with an extension, closed to the public,  giving winter access to a winter ski area) which is about 3000′ above the park entrance. At various points there were short walking trails allowing exploration of the diverse vegetation areas within the park.

A feature of the lusher parts of the Park flora are the “pandani” giant grass trees (Richea pandanifolia). At Lake Dobson the Pandani Grove trail allows one to walk around the Lake edge.

Given that it was a weekend, it was surprising that there seemed to be hardly anyone else in the park. Seeing another vehicle on the road near Lake Dobson, as I started the drive back down, came as quite a surprise!

There are some deep caves bordering the southern edge of the Park. Before returning to Hobart I detoured to look at the resurgence entrance to the Junee Cave.
