Stanley Park and Gastown

The core part of Vancouver occupies a peninsula with Stanley Park at its northern tip. The Wall Centre Hotel was situated just southeast of the main downtown area with “Gastown” situated between downtown and the docks, and Vancouver’s China Town at the southern edge of the downtown/Gastown area.

On the first weekend we hired bikes and rode around the periphery of Stanley Park.

Gastown was the original Vancouver neighbourhood dating back to the mid nineteenth century. In 1999 it appeared to be a mix of alternative lifestyle, trendy and tourist, and partially derelict. Having been once threatened with demolition in favour of a new freeway the area was now being actively preserved and the value of historic buildings such as the Stadium Inn recognised. The Angel of Victory Statue at the Wateerfront Station is a memorial to Canadian Pacific Railway employees killed in World War I.
