Science Notes: (3) Shear Measurements – Dr. Simpson’s probe

Used in combination with the TSD to give a density profile through the water, the free-fall probe would provide the data needed to calculate a profile of the Richardson number, an indication of the degree of stability in a turbulent flow…

Recording is by camera and galvos.

Also carries pressure transducer and 2 thermistors for temperature and temperature gradient, Max depth 1000m. Pressure switch drops weights and corrosive links drops more and acts as a back-up device. Flashing light and pinger help in recovery. First tests on [(attached to)] wire. When in use a TSD profile is also taken; object is to obtain profiles of the Richardson Number.
